Accomplish in the Future

This month's Round Robin is about things you want to accomplish. Do you have a bucket list?

I don't, not exactly, although there are some places I'd still like to visit like the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul and the Louvre in Paris; but I would hate the plane ride over and back, so the journeys are unlikely. I'd like to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Field Museum in Chicago again. They are both close enough to drive and perhaps share with grandkids. We'd visit in the spring or fall because I hate leaving my garden in summer. The growing season is much too short here in Northern Michigan. One of the main reasons I don’t like traveling is I am most comfortable in my own house and surroundings. I do, however, have things I want to accomplish. I like creating 'things.'

About thirty plots and character lists are sitting in a file on my computer. I was going great guns until writing helped me get a great part-time job and slowed down my production. I've been working on two books for the last six months, one of which every time I write a few paragraphs I have to recheck my research or do more research. I'd really like to finish those two stories and move on to the ones waiting in that file. There is a problem there, too, as new stories and different characters keep invading my mind, and while writing this and other blog posts provide good promotion and allow me personal expression, it takes time away from fiction writing.

I also have a quilt and some other needlework pieces that if I don't finish soon, the fabric and threads will start disintegrating from age. That is just one of my hobbies, although after the break I have had from picking up a needle, I don’t know if it falls into the ‘hobby’ category any longer. I also like to draw, paint, do calligraphy, make pin dolls, and bake bread. (I finally found a Russian Black Bread recipe that tastes like I remember from the defunct Pretzel Bell Restaurant!) I do a lot of Zen doodling (Pinterest)  when I don’t have a book to read at night. Painted faux finishes in marble, leather, water, adobe, and other murals cover the walls of my house. The photo below shows one of my pastimes (see pin dolls for other designs). Reading falls in here, too, but I’ve covered that topic in a recent post. Yet, I often feel guilty devoting time to these activities, and I am not sure why. Maybe because I consider them just putzing around.

My writing and my hobbies are my bucket list I guess. These things I want to finish and then continue with more new writing and craft projects. That said there are a few important events I want to witness: the graduation of my three grandchildren, and I'd like to share more time with my family, although they claim my visits too short. I suppose they are but feel that no one wants to outwear their welcome, especially me.

So there it is, not quite a bucket list — just a continuation. What objectives are on your bucket or still to-do list?

  1. Woke up to a bum Friday. The shower wouldn't turn on. Uh-ohh! Very cold night -27 to -30 degrees. Turned the other faucets on and they all worked, but shortly I heard a hiss and a pipe broke. I opened a cabinet door and water poured out. Also leaked down the wall into the dining room. Luckily, able to get a plumber. Insurance set a company to start fixing things -- I now no longer have a dining room or entry room ceiling, and probably will have to have a section of outside wall replaced. Needless to say I'll be a bit slow responding to things.

  2. Rhobin, Sorry to read the above comment and good luck with the plumber and drying out process.
I read your post with interest. Continuation sounds like a good way forward. Anne Stenhouse

  3. Crafts! Oh wow! I've been so busy with writing and kids that I haven't taken time to draw, paint or do any of the things I used to love. Now that the kids are teenagers, craft time isn't something we make the time for. Mostly movies and games. One day! BTW, love your Angel!

  4. Yikes! I hope you get your house back, back renovations can be a real nuisance.
You are already one busy lady, you have so many things going, I don't know how you manage them all. And should you risk traveling - both the Louvre and St. Sophia in Istanbul are beautiful.
Thanks, Rhobin, for picking a fun topic this month.

  5. I don't often think of myself as a 'crafty' person, but writing is a craft and you have given me the idea for my next blog! Thanks, Rhobin.

  6. Rhobin,
WOW, woman, you are crafty! I can imagine those do take quite a lot of time from writing, but if those help you relax and make you happy, then it's pretty okay that they take up some time, huh? P.S., loooove the dragon on your header--did you draw it?

  7. Rachel, I bought a cement cast dragon for ornamentation in my garden many years ago. He still guards my garden but I took a photo and manipulated it in Corel Photo-Pain to create the image on my blog. Thanks for liking it.

  8. Gardening is one of the only hobbies you list that I don't enjoy...but husband does, so it's all good. As long as there are home-grown tomatoes during the summer, I'm a happy woman.

I can't ever just sit and relax, I have to be doing something. So I crochet, sew, bake, cook, and write my novels. Some think it's odd that I'm such a "Suzy Homemaker" type, when I'm also such an ardent feminist. But I don't think they're mutually exclusive. Just because I enjoy doing these kinds of hobbies doesn't mean all women do...or that men shouldn't.

And yes, good luck with the home repairs. Sounds awful! And thanks for such a great bunch of topics for these blog tours!

  9. Rhobin I'm sorry to hear about all the stuff going on in your house: hope as you get things fixed with better stuff, this won't happen again. Our basement in MI flooded every year and ruined some great stuff.
Re. the bucket list: like you I have a great many projects on hand and I like just thinking of doing them some day.
