Kinsey Milhone (she has a lot of flaws) and Stephanie Plum (likewise). A new writer, Ray Daniels, has created a male character with plenty of flaws who is still likeable. I like everything Marilyn Robinson writes and also Barbara Kingsolver. Both have excellent characters. If we think of Madame Bovary and Anna Karinina, we realize that both women are flawed, but these books have more than stood the test of time. Huck Finn? Flawed, but great. Holden Caulfield? The Great Gatsby? All flawed. I love the canine narrator of Racing In the Rain, but he was definitely flawed. Ooooo, loved the bit about the soul. Yes...Rhobin,

Ooooo, loved the bit about the soul. Yes. Yes, yes, I very much agree. The soul is morality, the compass, and when that's gone...I liked too how you pointed out that psycho/sociopaths are actually pretty uncommon. It's no fun when the villain just ends up crazy, unless the writer handles it very carefully. There's the big grin, glittering eye crazy and then there's the unreachable, mental illness crazy. Not only is there a plethora of strong female characters, but the evil "bad gal" has moments where you can empathize with her. And the "too good to be true" spy, Jude Law, has some flaws that make him more believable. Melissa has her imperfections, but you spend the whole movie rooting for her anyway. Now THAT'S entertainment!

And thanks, Rhobin, for this great topic!
